Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve closing table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest enthusiasts in the world. While competing in web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. He regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of $40, 000. Gus more often than not buys in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I know Hansen is an amazing poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is penniless, he has absolutely no reason to play at the table with the min buy-in.
Buying in for the min takes a majority of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be one of the greatest players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total amount. I believe television can alter our perception of the real world at times. The best poker players anywhere in the world could be guys you have will not have heard of.
