Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to make it to the closing poker table in three of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a massive pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest players around the world. While participating in internet poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. Gus often participates in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen generally buys-in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I accept that Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has little or no reason to play at the game with the min buy in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Gus is accepted to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I believe tv can skew our perception of the real world sometimes. The best players in the world might just be players you have never heard about.
